Reformation Month 2018

It’s that time of year again! October 31st is Reformation Day. On that day, 501 years ago, Martin Luther nailed a piece of paper to a bulletin board. No one knew it would lead to the protestant reformation. Nor did they knew how great the revolution would become. The single most important result of the Reformation was the translation of Bible in common languages. You have access to Scripture because of the Reformation. Every October we celebrate our access to Scripture by saturating our lives with Scripture. We spend to whole month of October reading the Bible together. We have a church goal of 20,000 chapters. Will you help us reach that goal?

Follow the steps below to get ready for your reformation reading.

What is Reformation Month?

On October 31st, 1517 Martin Luther nailed what came to be known as the 95 Theses to the Castle Church door in Wittenburg, Germany. He didn't know it at the time, but his doctrinal dispute against indulgences would lead to the Protestant Reformation.

The heart of the Protestant Reformation was a return to the Bible as the only authority for Christian faith. For centuries, the Bible was out of reach for ordinary people. It was only available in Latin, and there were few who could read it. Martin Luther's principle contribution to the world was a translation of the Bible into the language of his people. Quickly, the Word was translated in most European languages. As the Word spread, so did the reformation.

Each October, we celebrate our free access to the Word of God by doing three things:

  • In depth study of Scripture

  • Reading, reading, and more reading

  • Giving for translating the Bible into more languages

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the reading challenge start?

Start reading on Sunday, September 30th.

How do I submit my reading?

Go to the Report Reading Page. Type your First and Last name and the number of chapters that you are reporting. Then click submit.

How often should I report my reading?

You can report at any interval that you like.  Most people report their reading at the end of each day. Some people report their reading after they finish a book of the Bible.  It's up to you.

Should I report reading for other people?

Yes. Just make sure you do not double report anything. We want the number to be honest.

Can children participate?

Absolutely. Even children who can't read can participate in this challenge. If you read to someone else, including children, we count each chapter read and each chapter heard. For example, I have three children in my family.  If I sit everyone down and read one chapter of the Bible together, out loud, then I would report one chapter for myself, one for my wife, and one for each of my children.

Can I report for my whole family?

Yes, but please separate the report into individuals. One of our goals is to reach 125 total participants. So, if you are reporting for yourself and your wife, or kids, submit separate reports for each individual.

How can I submit more than one report at a time?

Reload this page and the submit form will reset.

Does listening to an audio book count?

Yes, so long as it is active listening. So don't count chapters that your "listened" to while sleeping.

Do I have to use one of the provided reading plans?

No. You can read any section of the Bible that you would like.

What translation am I supposed to read?

Use a translation that you can read. Many translations are graded to higher or lower reading levels. So, if you not a regular reader, or don't already have a preferred translation, you may find the HCSB to be a good choice.  If you are a reader, and would like a more literal translation, you may find the ESV more to your liking. All I ask is that you choose a translation instead of a paraphrase (like the Message).

What if I read the whole New Testament before the month is over?

Then either start reading in the Old Testament, or start over on the New Testament. Whatever you do, keep reading and keep reporting.

Who can participate in this challenge?

Human beings. Sorry, your pets don't count.

When does the reading challenge end?

We will cut off the challenge at 6:30pm 0n October 31st when our Wednesday Night service begins.
